KEN FORST
I am a Chicago native, and I received a BA from Northeastern Illinois University in 1975. Early influences include covers and internal illustrations for the Saturday Evening Post by Norman Rockwell, Austin Briggs, the Wyeths and others.
My medium is called Glaze on Glass. I began to develop it in the mid 1990s. The glazing material is applied to the glass using standard artists' brushes and other tools. Although it is often mistaken for a form of etching, there are no etching methods involved. Because of the necessity of being illuminated from behind the images, this medium has presented its own particular challenges in the areas of framing and display.
I exploit the transparency of glass by making it possible to stop someone's eye at the very surface and get the story told by the glaze. At the same time, one can look through the glass and notice the ambient lighting conditions, while the image is still suspended there- like an interrupted thought or a recalled dream. Displaying these works in a place that allows a view to the outside world can make them very interesting, due to the constantly changing weather and light conditions.
