SUSAN ABBOTT

Susan Abbott graduated Summa Cum Laude from the Maryland Institute, College of Art, and received her MFA from the Hoffberger School of Painting at the Maryland Institute. She went on to study intaglio printmaking in the graduate department of the University of Iowa under Mauricio Lasansky. She has traveled extensively, painting in Mexico, Central America, and Europe. Susan Abbott's watercolor and oil paintings have been exhibited in galleries and museum shows in New York, Chicago, Washington and many other cities around the country. Her work is represented in numerous private and corporate collections in the U.S. and abroad. She lives and works in northern Vermont with her family, three cats, and farm animals.

She creates complex, unique watercolor and oil still life paintings and prints. Reviewers from around the country have praised Abbott for her "virtuosity", "awesome mastery" and "dazzling skill in the unforgiving medium of watercolor," and called her pieces "fantastic studies of color and form" and "sublimely everyday epics." She creates commissions, "table top biographies," for numerous corporations and individuals including Oprah Winfrey. She is also a popular teacher of art workshops in Vermont, Province, France, Tuscany, Italy and other sites around the world.

"Susan Abbott`s tables are about the moments left untold. We look down from a steep, overhead angle at a table surface covered with the haphazard evidence of a real life: remains of meals, half-played games of solitaire, newspaper clippings, maps. This layer in turn covers rich rugs or quilts, whose saturated colors set off the entire painting on a vibrant ground. We try to trace the progress of events, but our eye cannot stop moving, witnessing the windswept activity that created the arrangement, drawn across the surface by the diagonal lines, spots of pattern, and overlapping layers."
